Assembly is an exploratory trio co-led by drummer Chris Bear (Grizzly Bear), pianist Aaron Arntz (Grizzly Bear, Beirut, Edward Sharpe), and bassist Benjamin Campbell. The group found its footing in the resonant acoustics of a 19th-century church in Brooklyn, where they developed a wide-ranging repertoire and a shared improvisational language rooted in deep listening.
Blurring the lines between structure and spontaneity, Assembly reimagines favorite material - ranging from original composition to the works Paul Bley and Deerhoof - filtered through the lens of a piano trio. These reinterpretations often serve as springboards into extended improvisations and spontaneous compositions, forming a sound that is at once daring, delicate and deeply intuitive.
The trio found homes at iconic Brooklyn venues Baby’s All Right and Pioneer Works, and held an ongoing residency at Manhattan Inn, sharing stages with kindred spirits including Deerhoof, Here We Go Magic, Luke Temple, and Nightlands.
Their debut release, Russell St Recordings, was captured live in the church by longtime friend, bassist, and producer Andrew Raposo and mixed by Chris Bear. The album features original compositions that reflect the group’s commitment to freedom, subtlety, and exploration - music that emerges from a quiet place of connection and risk-taking.
