Slowly evolving analog soundscape
Imaginary Friends is a piece of music I made with my longtime friend and collaborator Phil Rodriguez, a beautiful musician and composer. We put it together during the peak of the pandemic lockdowns when it felt like the close-knit music community around us had suddenly been stretched terribly far apart.
It starts with a slow-moving, ambient synth bed - mostly Juno 60, Moog Prodigy, and some samples made by pitching down airy vocal sounds. Phil wrote the melodies and layered in the brass textures. We then ran parts of it through a Roland Space Echo to give it depth and atmosphere.
Phil and I have been making music together for 25 years, mostly in our band East West Quintet and his project Underbelly. I’m always struck by the deep, focused calm he brings into every thing he does.
