I Built: An Echo Base Delay Pedal

Analog-voiced delay pedal with pitch modulation.

Everyone loves a good delay pedal!

When I built this I was really into Connan Mockasin, and the way he used slow pitch LFO's on his sounds to create this really expressive variable wonkiness. At the time Mac Demarco and Homeshake were also using similar sounds, although I believe they approached this by using the wet signal from a chorus effect. Anyhow... when I found this pedal design that also had variable pitch modulation LFO on the echos I knew it was for me.

I added an echo feedback/runaway mod (the small red button at the bottom of the pedal), however I rarely use it as the PT2399 chip is a bit harsh when it feeds back, a far cry from the magic of an analog tape delay. When I'm after that sound I will stick with my Space Echo or a clone of the Ibanez Analog Delay which both sound much more musical.

The pedal turned out really well and I've used it quite frequently since I made it, including on the bass track of 'Swimming' from Kimono Dragon.

My friend Rawan Rihani painted this pedal for me and I love the vibe - it sparks serious joy.

Oh, hey

I always love chatting about music, so feel free to...
