Lee Sklar

Deep Cuts: Transcription Series

Transcriptions of Leroy Taylor, Leland Sklar and Patrick Wemberly

Although these three tracks seem quite disparate, I think the unifying traits that attracted me to all of these lines is that they are masterfully conceived, compositional, and serve to frame and augment the track while maintaining each players own unique character and voice. Plus they are all groovy as get out.

1. Leroy Taylor • Honey Bee

If you don't know the original track from band New Birth you've definitely heard it as the main sample in Wu Tangs Clan in da Front.

2. Leland Sklar • Alone Too Long

This 1975 Hall and Oates track is the opening song from Steven Merchants HBO show Hello Ladies. Hilarious show. Awesome track. Lee Sklar is one of my all time favorite bassists and is a north star for all things groove, tone and choices.

3. Patrick Wemberly • I Belong In Your Arms

This is an awesome track from an equally ensnaring album. I fear including this one does show my age and particular Brooklyn vintage, but alas. An extremely melodic and supportive line; the chorus reminds me of something Israel Crosby would play. Caroline Polacheck and Patrick Wemberly are such heavy musicians - it's cool to hear what they came up with together.
